Course description: The AP United States Government and Politics course gives students an analytical perspective on government and politics in the U.S.. This course includes both the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. government and politics and the analysis of specific examples. It also requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute U.S. government and politics. Students will also become acquainted with the variety of theoretical perspectives and explanations for various behaviors and outcomes. Download a copy of the College Board’s description of AP US Government and Politics (PDF).

Teacher: Joe Wagner, Catherine McCauley HS. Joe has taught high school social studies for 26 years, teaching AP American Government since the inception of that course. He is presently teaching at Catherine McAuley High School in Portland, and has also taught courses at CMCC, SMCC and St. Joseph College.  He has worked in the Federal Government for the Department of Health and Human Services, is a former member of the Maine House of Representatives, and has served as an AP essay reader for 9 years.

Suggested student preparation: Strong past performance in social studies and English courses is recommended. Also, read the US Constitution thoroughly and take notes and write down questions. Follow the news from a balance of sources, or from an notoriously objective source such as http://www.csmonitor.com
