Course description: The AP English Language and Composition course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts and to become skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Students learn to be aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing. Download a copy of the College Board’s description of AP English Language and Composition (PDF).

Teacher: Carolyn Gosselin, Biddeford HS. Carolyn has a passion for bridges; that is, she loves helping students “cross the bridge” between high school and college. She has been teaching English courses at Biddeford High School for nine years and York County Community College for thirteen years. Her main areas of expertise include Composition, American Literature, British Literature, and Documentary Studies. Carolyn has her MS in Adult Education from the University of Southern Maine (2008), her MA in English Literature from the University of Maine (1998), her BA in English from the University of Maine (1992), and her Secondary English Teaching Certification (grades 7-12).
